: Hi All!

: Problem: Way too black sparkplugs, sooty and black.

: Conditions: 45 idle jet, 160 main jet, 2.64 nozzle jet, needle in ordinary position, 1043 Q-Tech engine, 320/3 canshaft, 44 mm inlet valves, valve clearance 20/15, NGK 5 KOhm resistor caps, NGK BP6ET plugs, ignition timing set to 3-4 degrees static, HPN open airfilter, standard exhaust system

Matz,

If anything your jetting (at least the needle jet) would seem lean. (Although it might well be correct as the snorkels help airflow in the midrange.) I would suggest:

1) Check your float level. Does the float shut off the gas when the mold line is level to the carb body? If yes, how much gas is in the bowl if you remove it after shutting off the fuel? (This is a bit tricky because if you are not fast, gas from the line will drain into the bowl.) If the bowl is nearly full, your floats themselves could be going bad and not floating -- this eventually happens, but is more of a problem with US corn gas.)

2) If "gaskets" does not include o-rings, check them as has been suggested by another poster.

3) Is your jet stock (the part into which the main jet screws) snugged up tight. If this is just a little ways from bottomed out in its whole, it will completely screw up midrange jetting.

4) The enricheners ("choke" carburetors) are directional. If you disassembled these for gaskets, or mixed up left and right, these will be on "choke" when the lever is "off choke".

One of these things is likely the problem.

If you are interested in a very good English language technical list, see

It is associated with the Airheads Beemer Club (ABC). Airhead=luftgekühltes Zylinderkopf (2V).
